The role of Concept Engineer is tailored to a “creative engineer”. The aim is to use the product requirements, outlined by product strategy and concept engineering, to explore and define, using a variety of methods, a suitable product architecture and appropriate level of physical experience.
Global Product Strategy Team
The Global product strategy team leads the creation and approval of global product strategies and plans. Our team defines and shapes future vehicle and powertrain portfolios for Royal Enfield globally.
Working with Design, Marketing, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Finance, we aim to create product plans that engage our customers, deliver strong financial returns, and meet or exceed all regulatory requirements. We provide the necessary analysis and support to make key strategic decisions in the area of long-term vehicle forecasting in all regions of the globe. Our team conducts market research to instil a deep customer understanding into Royal Enfield’s brand and product development activities.
Concept Engineering Team
The Concept Engineering team operates within the Global product strategy team, liaising directly with the Industrial design, Product development, Sourcing and Manufacturing departments to generate new iconic products for the brand.
The responsibility of the team is to generate, then evolve and present whole vehicle (and discrete components) concepts to a stage that can be carried to production by the Product development team.
Key responsibilities
The candidate will work with the other members of the Product Strategy and Concept team, along with designers from the Industrial Design team to generate and present new product concept ideas for, and to, senior management; allowing product planning to react quickly to develop robust product specifications prior to a project being released to an engineering design team to carry out detailed engineering work.
You will create these initial concept vehicle schemes based on your own creative engineering judgement, target data from benchmarking activities and ergonomic requirements. You will develop early styling underlay models based on target dimensions, (i.e. creation of zones defining boundaries for required seat height, reach , knee clearance, luggage fitment etc) working with Industrial Design to resolve any early conflicts between initial concept package requirements and potential Industrial Design theme.
Where deviation from current methodology or new concepts require validation, it is the responsibility of Concept Engineer to investigate and if required, carry out physical testing / analysis, then present the results to show confidence in the design.
Your responsibilities will also include, but are not limited to;
Translating strategic and functional objectives into technical requirements,
Developing and enhancement of existing methods and process,
Establishing target BOM and investment prices for new vehicle programmes,
Identify cost reduction opportunities and
Technical benchmarking and analysis of competitive vehicles.
Success metrics of the role
Goals:
Kick start whole bike concepts to create a robust starting point for specification documents to be confirmed then design teams to carry out engineering concept.
Improve the link between Product Planning and Design by improving the link between the product requirements and engineering feasibility.
Improve the efficiency of the concept phase.
Keep records of concept phase so concepts can always be re-visited
Work with other Product strategy team members to define product requirements
Support the team with early guidance of concept feasibility and cost-effective product manufacturing and assembly recommendations.
Work with sourcing to estimate costs for early design concepts in order to facilitate business case and feature/benefit decisions.
Establish fundamental packaging issues, constraints and feasibilities
Create fully laid out, structured CAD schemes
Document how the concept has evolved in a manner that can be presented to various departments.
Mule bike and styling bike design support
Partnering with Product Marketing to explain product's technical attributes and their value to press and analysts
Attending various shows and events to keep up to date on engineering trends and developments.
Keep up to date on current manufacturing capabilities and limitations of vendors and plants.
Recommend new materials and processes that may be used in creating unique and competitively advantaged product.
Deliverables:
Input into KOD (kick off document) process
Input into QFD phase of project (creating requirements based on testing)
Input into PCO (Product concept outline document) to define what the product should be.
Carry out Initial concept to create packaged CAD layout of complete bike
Prove off concepts to an appropriate level (For example CAE/ hand calc / actual physical testing)
Mule bike and styling bike design support
Presentation of information at relevant gates.
Scope and Impact
The Concept Engineering team is a small team with 2 members based at the UK Technical Centre. It sits with the Global Product Strategy team, within the GCO (Global Commercial Organisation) but also links into the GTO (Global Technical Organisation) in terms of procedures and operating systems.
