Uncover the kingdom of Bhutan

Ride through the winding mountain passes and challenging trails on some of the hardest terrains the world has experienced, in the land of the Thunder Dragons.

PREPARING YOUR RIDE

Get your machine ready to take on the mountains of Bhutan.

Preparing your ride
  • Get your motorcycle serviced well in advance. Do not wait to get it done at the the last minute.
  • At ground level, the most important things are the tyres and the wheels. Ensure that you have adequate tread on them. We recommend you start the ride with a brand new set of tubes; you are less likely to face punctures. Additionally, get the rims trued, an out-of-shape rim will affect handling.
  • Inspect and make sure that your motorcycle has genuine RE parts, especially hubs, spokes, rims and other engine components. We cannot provide support for modified items and in such case you are requested to carry your own spares. We can make arrangements to carry them in the Back-Up Vehicle.
  • Check the rear swing-arm bush for play and replace if needed.
  • Check the condition of front fork oil seals and replace if needed.
  • Check your chain and rear sprocket for wear. If you find that there are less than four notch adjustments or broken teeth, replace your chain and both your sprockets.
  • Your motorcycle’s clutch is really crucial for this trip, so make sure that it is in good order and adjusted properly. When you open your clutch cover, also check the primary chain and the adjuster. Do not use any kind of additional insert under the chain adjuster. If the adjuster has reached its limit, replace the primary chain.
  • Check the battery and the earthing connections. If you have any history of electrical trouble, be sure that the problem is completely solved.
  • Check for play in the steering column and replace the ball race bearing if necessary.
  • Check all the rubber components like carburettor manifold, fuel lines, air filter manifold etc. for cracks and tears, and replace if in doubt.
  • Check all cables and if found bent or frayed, replace immediately.
  • Finally tighten all the nuts and bolts and if it is found to slip or if the threads are damaged, replace the relevant parts.
gearing up
  • HELMETS: A good quality full face helmet protects you from impact and shelters your head from the elements. Pick a helmet that fits you well and provides proper ventilation.

  • NECK PROTECTION: On Tour of Bhutan, 2018, it’s important to keep your neck warm and covered with multi-utility headgear, which can be used as a scarf or a balaclava. The headgear is also effective in keeping the dust and cold out, and also wicks sweat away from your neck.

  • RIDING JACKETS: Look for a protective jacket that offers good protection from impact and abrasion and is adaptable to the ever-changing weather conditions. Make sure the jacket has impact protectors, an abrasion resistant outer shell and layers to keep you warm and dry.

  • GLOVES: Good fitting, Water-resistant protective gloves are a must for this ride. Choose a pair which will protect your knuckles and finger joints, keep your palm fatigue-free and has a secure closure system.

  • RIDING PANTS: Look for waterproof pants with protection in the knees, helping you ride in comfort and confidence.

  • BOOTS: Select a pair of boots with heel, ankle and shin protectors; a soft foot-bed and flexing zones that move with you. Go for a fit which will accommodate 2 layers of socks without getting too tight.

  • LUGGAGE SOLUTIONS: Pack everything you need in a purpose-built bag and throw it over your motorcycle. Saddlebags, tank bags and tail/duffle bags are the most common and best suited for this purpose.
For Tour of Bhutan, pick one which is water-repellent and protects against rain and dust.

GEARING UP

Your safety and comfort on this ride depends on getting the right gear.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Rules of the road.

Rules and Regulations

We try to keep rules and regulations to a minimum unless when necessary for the harmony and safety of the individual or group. However we expect the few that we have, to be followed very strictly, failing which we may exclude that particular participant from the rest of the trip.

Rules
  • Intoxication:

We do not allow any form of intoxication while on the motorcycle during the Tour of Bhutan 2018.

  • Conduct:

Participants are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that preserves their dignity and others' around them, including other participants, support staff and locals of the region.

  • Environmental responsibility:

We must try and ensure that we maintain the sanctity of the region we are passing through.

  • Medical advice:

If you are under medical treatment, we expect you to follow the medical advice very strictly. We also strongly recommend participants to carry warm clothing as well as warm liners on the ride as it may get cold during and after the ride.

Luggage
  • A vehicle is arranged to carry your luggage, and it will be carried at the owner’s risk. Each rider is allowed to place one bag with maximum permissible limit of 15Kgs. Each rider must ensure that their luggage is loaded and unloaded every day.

Satellite luggage (to be carried on the motorcycle at all times)

The support vehicle is the last vehicle to start and last vehicle to reach, hence there might be a delay in participants being able to access their luggage after reaching a destination. Also, it can be tiresome to wait for the service vehicle for something as basic as a tube. Hence your satellite luggage carried on the motorcycle should consist of:
    1. Change of clothes.
    2. One pair of footwear
    3. Set of tubes
    4. Spark plug
    5. Throttle & clutch cables
    6. OEM toolkit

Service
  • Service Back-Up – we will have a mechanic travelling along with some basic spares. If needed, parts may be replaced and the rider will be charged for the same. We will do our best to help with the motorcycle, but each rider is responsible for bringing their motorcycle home. Therefore, motorcycle preparation is very crucial and the scrutiny will be thorough. We will guide you in both.
