Student Design Competition

Royal Enfield today announces the two winning designs for the brand’s inaugural “Style your Own - Student Design Competition” - a pan-European initiative which sought to engage with the next generation of designers, engineers, illustrators, tastemakers and motorcycle enthusiasts.

The competition was run in conjunction with a number of prestigious universities and design institutions located in the UK, France, Italy, Spain and Germany which resulted in over 180 individual design submissions by the participating students.

The competition aimed to attract a new, dynamic and younger audience to the motorcycle community.  Royal Enfield set students a simple challenge to design ‘Their Ultimate Interpretation’ of both the Interceptor 650 & Continental GT 650 motorcycles that each student believed would appeal and excite both existing, as well as new motorcyclists.

Each student was supplied with editable layered photoshop design files created by Royal Enfield’s Custom Design Team, and then tasked to creatively personalise their own colour, trim and graphic for specific parts of both the Interceptor 650 & the Continental GT 650 (including the addition of selective Genuine Motorcycle Accessories).

All design submission was supported with an “inspiration board”  showing each student’s full creative and research process - combining elements of Royal Enfield’s rich past (drawing inspiration from 120 years of brand heritage) - with more progressive, forward-thinking design approaches to appeal to the next generation of Royal Enfield owners and riders.

A Final Shortlist of 12 Designs (6 per motorcycle model) was then presented to a select European Panel of Judges to decide the ultimate two winning designs, based on a scoring matrix with three unique categories.  The two designs with the highest total scores from the panel for both the Continental GT and the Interceptor 650 were then declared the winners.

European Panel of Judges:

  1. Alexandre Lazerges (GQ Magazine, France)
  2. Amy Shore (Automotive Photographer, UK)
  3. Alberto Soiatti (Content Creator, Italy)
  4. Roberto Parodi (Riders Magazine, Italy)
  5. Christophe Gaime (Moto Revue Classic, France)
  6. Ulrich Baumann (Motorrad.Online, Germany)
  7. Hugo Wilson (Bike Magazine, UK)
  8. Javier Pérez Rubio (Soymotero.net, Spain)
  9. Alejandro Giralde (Motorbike Magazine, Spain)
  10. Marc C. Röder (Ramp Magazine, Germany)

2 Winning Design Students:

Luke Robbins - Coventry University, UK (Continental GT 650)

Alessio Ramundo - NABA, Italy (Interceptor 650)

These two winning designs will now be built at Royal Enfield’s UK Technical Centre as a pair of one-of-a-kind builds, with each of the winning students working closely with Royal Enfield Product Design and in-house Custom Teams to further fine tune their designs.

Says Mark Wells, Head Global Product Strategy & Industrial Design “We’re delighted with the levels of creativity and originality of design shown by so many students across the EU during our inaugural  ‘Style Your Own: Student Design Competition’. Working collaboratively is essential to the way in which we operate at Royal Enfield, so we’re very excited to be able to give the two winning students an amazing opportunity to work alongside the Royal Enfield team as we bring their designs to life, from blank canvas to final custom builds.”
